I have recently found the only way to pack and carry a heavy winter sleeping bag and that is stuffed into a dry bag with an air valve that allows you to "vacuum pack" the sleeping bag when you need to relocate. Since one is not really decreasing atmospheric pressure, but rather crushing the air out of the item packed using body weight, this is not vacuum packing - hence the use of the quotation marks.
